Council's Commission Peter Burns
In the year 1586, when the Netherlands were locked in a deadly war for independence from Spain, the Grand Council of Holland commissioned Admiral Herring to intercept a Spanish flotilla bringing gold from the New World colonies to prop up the mutinous Spanish army. Rear Admiral Ghyse was placed second in command. On the dangerous sea when an overwhelming Spanish flotilla was sighted, Admiral Herring ordered the mission to be aborted. But Ghyse refused to leave - his orders were clear. Only Ghyse and the brave men who joined him were left to fight for their families and freedoms.
