Songs For My Daughters Ross Smithe
“Songs for My Daughters” is a collection of songs I composed for each of my three precious daughters, Sophia, Christianna, and Abigail. The Bible says that children are a gift and blessing from the Lord (Psalm 127:3), and God has indeed made a special bond between fathers and daughters! In these songs, I have sought to express my fatherly love and devotion toward them, as well as to highlight the unique, God-given beauty and character each one of them possesses.
“Eyes of a Child” (Song for Sophia Merie)- Sophia (Gr. “wisdom”) is my firstborn child, now 16 years old. I remember distinctly holding her on the day she was born, and thinking how part of me would like to capture that moment, and keep her as a small child who would always fit in my arms! But I also knew that it was my responsibility to raise her up to maturity, that she would one day know the joy and blessedness which comes through knowing Christ. This song is my charge to her to press on to godly, wise womanhood, and yet to never loose the simple, steadfast faith of a child (Mark 10:15).
“You are a Servant” (Song for Christianna Elise)- Christianna is my next born daughter, now 12 years old, and blossoming into a young woman right before my eyes! From my earliest recollections, I remember our little Christianna (her name means “Christian, full of grace”) as the girl with the dazzling smile and beautiful blue eyes. However, her beauty has always been much more than skin deep! She has always been so enthusiastic about serving and being a blessing to others, content to labor in the shadows, while showing forth the “ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God (1 Peter 3:4).”
“Father's Joy” (Song for Abigail Rose)- My youngest daughter Abigail is now 5 years old, and growing up all too fast! The name Abigail means “father's joy”, and how she has lived up to that reputation! One of my most cherished memories from her infancy is tightly holding her tiny frame, and thanking God for making her a part of our family. He has indeed used this precious little “rose” to bring a unique and wonderful dimension of beauty and sweetness into my life. In her bright and smiling face, I see the countenance of my Heavenly Father, who “shines in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 4:6).”
“Turn Our Hearts”- This song was not written specifically for my daughters, but as a prayer to the Lord for my own heart, that I would be faithful to His charge to walk beside all of my children (5 sons included!), to lead them with biblical vision and purpose, and to bring them up in the “nurture and admonition of the Lord (Eph. 6:4).” It is so encouraging to see that God is presently engaged in a work of family renewal, by turning the hearts of men to their families, so making ready a “people prepared for the Lord (Mal. 4:6; Luke 1:17).” My family recently had the joy and privilege of making a short film based on this theme, also entitled “Turn Our Hearts” (available for download on BlueBehemoth.com).
